Public Works and Utilities

The Public Works & Utilities Department consists of a variety of different divisions with a common goal of providing vital city services to citizens of Elkhart. These divisions operate and maintain the City's stormwater conveyance system, drinking water supply and distribution system, wastewater collection system, and wastewater treatment.

The mission of Public Works is to deliver safe, affordable, and reliable sewer and water utilities and maintain an efficient and effective transportation infrastructure network to promote economic growth and improve quality of life for the utility customers, commuters, and citizens of Elkhart.

Water and Sewer Emergencies

The City of Elkhart Public Works and Utilities has staff available 24 hours a day to respond to calls related to water and sewer emergencies. Please call 574-293-2572.

The City will respond to all sewer main and water main related issues. The City does not assist with internal plumbing issues. The City can assist with issues related to water meters 2 inches and under in size, water service lines in the public right-of-way 2 inches and under in size, shutting off water to a building, and certain sewer lateral issues through the City's Sewer Insurance Program or Sewer Backflow Preventer Program.
